Indian defender Bijay Chhetri joins South American club

Indian footballer Bijay Chhetri has signed with a South American club, becoming the first Indian player to join such a club on a permanent deal.

Uruguayan club Colon FC, based in the capital city Montevideo, has officially signed him. Colon plays in Uruguay’s second-tier league, Segunda Division Profesional.

The 23-year-old defender was initially on loan at Colon from Chennaiyin FC. He is from Manipur and began his football career with Shillong Lajong. He made his debut in 2018 against Indian Arrows and has since played for Chennai City, Real Kashmir, Sreenidi Deccan, and Chennaiyin FC.

Bijay made his debut for Colon FC in November 2024 against La Luz. He is the second Indian player to play in South America, after Romeo Fernandes, who played on loan for Brazil’s Athletico Paranaense in 2015.

Currently, Colon FC is in eighth place in Uruguay’s second division league standings.
