English club Chelsea have reached the quarterfinals of the FIFA Club World Cup by defeating Benfica 4-1.
The match, delayed due to bad weather, ended early Sunday morning. After a 1-1 draw in regular time, the game went into extra time.
Chelsea had taken the lead in the 64th minute with a goal from Reece James. However, in injury time, Benfica were awarded a penalty, and Ángel Di María scored to level the match 1-1.
In extra time, Chelsea scored three more goals. Chris Nkunku found the net in the 108th minute, followed by goals from Pedro Neto in the 114th and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in the 117th minute, sealing a 4-1 win.
Benfica were reduced to 10 players in the 91st minute after Gianluca Prestianni received a red card.
In another pre-quarterfinal match last night, Brazilian club Palmeiras defeated fellow Brazilian side Botafogo 1-0 to advance to the last eight.
Chelsea will now face Palmeiras in the quarter-final.
