Police have launched an investigation into a tragic lift accident that killed two workers at an under-construction building in Kathmandu.
The incident took place on Asar 17 (early July) at a nine-story building being built by Potala Development Pvt. Ltd. The victims, 32-year-old Pradesh Chaudhary from Kailali and 22-year-old Bishal Chaudhary from Bardiya, were working on installing the lift when the metal chain suddenly snapped, causing the lift to fall.
According to police, the workers had reached the fifth floor while applying grease to the lift when the accident occurred. Kathmandu District Police spokesperson SP Apilraj Bohara stated, “We have completed the initial study. Based on the complaint filed by the families, we are now investigating the case under charges related to death. It is still unclear whether it was a pure accident or negligence — that will be confirmed after the investigation.”
Following the accident, the contractor and the victims’ families reached a private settlement. The bodies were handed over after an agreement that included insurance coverage and additional compensation.
Both workers were rushed to Bir Hospital but were declared dead at 5:10 PM the same day.
