Thailand launches airstrikes after Cambodian gunfire kills one

Thailand’s military has carried out airstrikes targeting two Cambodian military bases after Cambodian forces allegedly opened fire, killing one person and injuring three others.

According to the Bangkok Post, the airstrikes were aimed at military posts in Cambodia. Thai army deputy spokesperson Richa Suksuwan said, “We used air power as planned, targeting military outposts.”

The situation escalated after Cambodian troops reportedly fired at a Thai military base in Surin province, near the northeastern border. Tensions were reported at at least six locations by Wednesday morning, the Bangkok Post stated.

Cambodian officials have also confirmed the airstrikes. Prime Minister Hun Manet said Thai forces attacked Cambodian military posts.

Speaking to AP, Cambodian officials stated, “Cambodia always supports peaceful solutions to conflicts. But in this case, after an armed attack, we have no choice but to respond with force.”

Meanwhile, five Thai soldiers were injured in a landmine explosion near the border in Ubon Ratchathani province. Thai officials claim the mine was placed in an area recently taken over by Cambodia.

In response to rising tensions, Thailand has now closed parts of the border with Cambodia. Although the two countries have a long history of border disputes, relations had remained mostly stable since a major clash in 2011.

Cambodia had proposed going to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague in May 2024 to resolve four disputed border zones. However, Thailand rejected the ICJ’s jurisdiction in the case.
