Three children who went missing while swimming in the Bheri River in Jajarkot have been found dead. The incident took place on Friday afternoon in Manmai, Nalgad Municipality-8.
The last body, that of 12-year-old Asha Kusari, was found on Monday evening, three days after the incident. Her body was discovered about 4 kilometers south of the incident site, near Chapakhola in Nalgad-7, according to DSP Basanta Kumar Sharma of the District Police Office, Jajarkot.
Earlier, the bodies of 16-year-old Bhagwati Nepali, daughter of Tek Bahadur Nepali, and 10-year-old Mahesh Kusari, son of Surendra Kusari, were found. Asha was Surendra’s daughter and had been missing until Monday.
All three children had returned home from school on Friday and went to the river to bathe. Growing up in the riverside village of Manmai, they were familiar with the Bheri River and had swum there many times before. But that day turned tragic.
According to police, Mahesh was the first to be swept away. Asha and Bhagwati jumped in to try to save him, but all three were carried away by the strong current.
As soon as the police received information about the incident, a rescue team of nine officers led by Inspector Ganesh Khanal from the Area Police Office in Aathbiskot, Rukum West, was sent to the site.
Bhagwati was pulled from the water unconscious and taken to Aathbis Nagar Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Mahesh’s body was found around 900 meters downstream later that evening.
The incident happened near the border between Jajarkot and Rukum West districts, at a place where the river flows between Aathbiskot Municipality-9 of Rukum and Manmai of Nalgad Municipality-8 in Jajarkot. The children were residents of Manmai.
