After 39 months of construction, the Gwarko overpass has finally come into operation. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli officially inaugurated the overpass on Friday. Although he was the chief guest at the event, he asked SSP Nawaraj Adhikari, chief of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police, to cut the ribbon.

This is the first overpass built in the area, and Prime Minister Oli said it will make vehicle movement easier along the Koteshwor–Satdobato section. He added that drivers and passengers will no longer have to face traffic jams like before.

According to senior divisional engineer Pradeep Bhandari from the Quality, Research and Development Center under the Department of Roads, the overpass was built to reduce frequent traffic jams in that area. Vehicles using the overpass will no longer need to stop in the middle of the road.

The contractor company will be responsible for its maintenance for five years. If any design-related issues are found, the same company must fix them for up to ten years.

The overpass is 320 meters long towards Koteshwor and 185 meters towards Satdobato, with a ramp width of 10.2 meters. It is a four-lane road with blacktopping done in four layers on both sides.

The overpass was built under the Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) model by Ashish-Samanantar-Religare JV at a contract cost of Rs 170.68 million. The work was delayed several times, and penalties were imposed from mid-December to mid-June to push the contractor to complete it, said engineer Bhandari.

Since the contract did not include installation of street lights and CCTV cameras, the Department of Roads will now coordinate separately to add them.

Construction began in Falgun 2078 (February–March 2022) with an aim to complete the work within two years. According to the agreement, the project should have been completed by Falgun 12, 2080 (late February 2024), but multiple deadline extensions led to penalties before the work was finally finished.
